The Nuriootpa High School Livestock Club enjoyed a successful weekend at the Royal Adelaide Show, including a second placing, three third placings and a call-back and a special mention.

The action began on Friday with official weigh-ins of the school’s three steers, Soundwave Winston (544kg), Whiplash (540kg) and Wrangler (550kg), followed by an educational session delivered by the South Australian Youth Beef Breeders (SAYBB) in which students learnt valuable show presentation tips and techniques.

Friday evening students Ruby, Jessica and Riley competed in the School Paraders’ competition where they were judged on their handling skill and relationship with their steer.

“Ruby came away with a third in the novice class, Jessica a third in the intermediate class, and Riley received a special mention from the judge for the way he handled his steer’s misbehaviour in the ring,” explained Ms Shania Cornish, agriculture and Cattle Club teacher at Nuriootpa High School.

Across Friday evening and Saturday afternoon Wrangler and Whiplash were presented in purebred TFI selection competitions, but unfortunately neither were successful in placing. However, Soundwave Winston shone in the Saturday night cross breed competition.

“Thanks to Duane Wilson for his assistance with the preparations of our Limousin x Murray Grey steer, Soundwave Winston, which paid off with Winston taking away third place in a very tough class of heavy domestic steers – we were even up against studs!” explained Ms Cornish.

Following an early-morning start on Sunday, Wrangler and Whiplash competed side-by-side in the ring, with Wrangler taking second place. Ruby also received a call-back for the handler’s competition with Wrangler, though, despite her exceptional efforts in handling him, did not receive a placing.

The team now eagerly await the carcase results to be announced at the Show on Wednesday night.
