Department for Education Deputy Chief Executive, Mr Peter Kelly, returned to Nuriootpa High School this week to explore the school’s unique Blue Gum Woodlands and learn more about how this unique space is being incorporated across the curriculum.

Following a musical welcome reception performance by the school’s concert band, Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officer Ms Brooke Klose, along with two proud First Nation’s students, delivered an Acknowledgement of Country.

Inclusive Education Centre (IEC) teacher and Blue Gum Woodlands project lead, Mr Will Conway and his class led Mr Kelly on an immersive tour of the Woodlands alongside Principal Mr David Marino.

“We are proud to share the work being done by our staff and students to rehabilitate and preserve the Woodlands, and the opportunities this provides for learning and building connections,” said Mr Marino.

In recognition of the dedication and commitment of the staff and students involved in the project Mr Kelly presented a special award to Mr Conway for his 10-plus years of work on the Woodlands, and to Student Support Officer Ms Michelle Burgess for her ongoing contributions. Certificates were also presented to Mr Conway’s IEC class and student ‘Wildlife Champion’.

Nuriootpa High School extend thanks to Mr Kelly for taking the time to visit and engage with staff and students and appreciate the efforts of those involved in representing and showcasing the school.
