Nuriootpa High School Sheep and Goat Club students achieved ‘baa-rillant’ results at the Royal Adelaide Show this week, walking away with not just one, but two first placings, a third and two forth placings.

Over 300 animals and 39 schools competed in the goat classes – the largest to-date – while 250 merino wethers and 40 schools participated in the respective sheep and fleece competitions.

“The competition is becoming more popular each year, and our students were fantastic – they represented the school and themselves to a very high standard,” said Mr Josh Bottrall, agriculture teacher at Nuriootpa High School.

The school’s Kalahari Red goat, Morty, took first place, while Buttercup, the school’s Rangeland goat, took fourth place.

Adding to the school’s success, student Sophie V was selected as a finalist in the ATASA Goat Handlers Competition.

“Sophie represented both herself and the school exceptionally,” reflected Mr Bottrall.

Nuriootpa High School’s Sheep Club also enjoyed strong results across the two-day competition schedule which saw the ‘best pen of three’ on Wednesday and individual animal and handler judging on Thursday.

The school took the blue ribbon in the merino fleece class and received both third and fourth place in the individual merino wether meat class.

A number of students also took part in the young judges’ competitions, which provided an opportunity to connect with and learn from industry professionals in developing skills in evaluating sheep and fleece.
