Year 9 Drama students at Nuriootpa High School have spent the past ten weeks immersed in the exciting process of staging two twenty-minute productions: Mean Girls and Harry Potter.

Beginning with the audition process, students learnt about performance skills, characterisation, and the importance of preparation and confidence. Following casting the actors dedicated themselves to script learning, rehearsals, dramatic expression, and developing strong teamwork on stage while stagehand and production teams worked tirelessly behind the scenes on set design and painting, prop development, music selection, lighting design, backstage organisation, and scene changes.

“It has been so rewarding to witness the tremendous growth shown by all students involved. Over the course of the project, students have developed resilience, collaboration skills, creativity, and confidence,” reflected drama teacher Ms Darlington.

“They’ve also learnt just how much effort and organisation is required to produce a successful performance!” she added.

The final performances, to a large audience comprised of Year 9 and 10 students and Arts faculty members, were entertaining and energetic, and attracted high praise from both students and staff, reflective of the hard work invested by the students.

“As their teacher, I am incredibly proud of the dedication and effort demonstrated by each and every student.

It has been absolutely wonderful to see the Arts in action within our school community and to watch students support one another, step outside their comfort zones, and shine both on stage and behind the scenes; not to mention the celebration, pride, and dopamine rush that came after the performance!” said Ms Darlington.
