Specialist programs
At Nuriootpa High School, we recognise that success is individual. We offer a range of programs to support diverse student needs and learning styles. Our school boasts a strong inter-school sports program, is a designated music specialist school, and operates a renowned agriculture program, including an innovative Wine Education program.
Inclusive Education Centre (IEC)
Nuriootpa High School is equipped to provide specialised learning for students with high support needs through our Inclusive Education Centre (IEC). Designed specifically for high-needs learners, the IEC features accessible bathrooms and a dedicated outdoor play area.
Students within the IEC follow a curriculum aligned with the Australian Curriculum, tailored to their individual abilities and goals outlined in their One Plan. They are supported to achieve their SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education) through a modified model in the senior years. By negotiation, students may also be integrated into appropriate mainstream classes.
The IEC offers opportunities for sensory activities to support regulation and de-escalation, including tools such as fidget toys, drawing and craft, Lego, rocking chairs, swings, music, or walks.
Nuriootpa High School also provides multiple special classes and flexible learning models to enable learner success.
Tailored Learning
A Tailored Learning (TL) enrolment offers valuable support for students who find full-time, mainstream classes challenging. Through TL, students are assigned a dedicated Case Manager to identify and address barriers to successful engagement.
TL students follow an individualised, part-time timetable that may include a combination of learning opportunities such as:
- NHS Flexible Learning Centre (FLC)
- NHS Reengaging in Mainstream Education (RiME) Program
- TAFE training
- Community-based programs and work placements.
This flexible approach allows students to continue working toward their personal and educational goals while receiving support to succeed.
This flexible approach allows students to work towards their personal and educational goals while receiving targeted support. TL locations may vary, including dedicated facilities on-site, off-site managed sites (e.g., FLC), or online.
Sport
School sport offers students the chance to build resilience, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. Nuriootpa High School has a proud sporting tradition and actively participates in inter-school competitions across the state. We currently offer 18 inter-school sports and operate around 40 teams.
Our annual whole-school Sports Day, typically held in term 1, celebrates teamwork and school pride. It provides students with an opportunity to develop resilience, determination, and friendships through active participation – regardless of ability.
Music
Nuriootpa High School is a one of only nineteen music focus schools across South Australia, offering students the opportunity to engage in optional instrumental music lessons at little or no extra cost.
Instrumental Music (IM) lessons are available for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, drums and voice. Piano and keyboard lessons are also available on-site via a private tutor for a small fee per lesson. Instrumental hire is available through our school, with cost of hire dependent on the type of instrument.
IM students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of ensembles and concert band/orchestral groups, with a wide range of performance and immersive learning opportunities offered.
Wine Education
In 1992, pioneered by Kevin Hoskin, Nuriootpa High School became the first school in Australia to operate a commercial winery. Producing just one hogshead (~ 240 litres) in the first year, Nurihannam Wines has grown exponentially over the past 25+ years. Today it produces multiple wine varietals annually and consistently achieves award-winning results.
The Wine Education program at Nuriootpa High School focuses on developing industry-relevant skills, not only in winemaking but also in related areas such as design and marketing. The program offers students a unique opportunity to gain the skills and experience necessary to confidently enter the wine and viticulture industry or pursue further study in the field.
